Silver Earrings

There is a much greater range of silver earrings than any other type of Miao silverware. The Museum of Guizhou Province alone has, nearly one hundred kinds in its incomplete collection. There are four types of earrings: drop, circle, hook and wheel. Drop and circle types are the most popular types and earrings use other patterns besides the usual flowers, birds, butterflies and dragons.

Silver Bonnet Ornaments

The Miao people regard silver as talisman against evil spirits, so people living around the Qingshui River have a custom of decorating their children's bonnets with silver ornaments. Traditional bonnet ornaments include lions, fish and butterflies. Chinese characters such as fu (prosperity), lu (high position), shou (longevity), xi (happiness) and changming fugui (longevity with wealth and honor) are also used because of the influence of dominant Han Chinese culture.

She could embroider the paintings and cut the embroidery scripts, which had laid the foundation of the Xiang embroidery. Later, she established the Xiang embroiderywith her good friend Wei by combining the Yue embroidery to the Suzhou embroidery. At the early stage, they hired embroidery workers of 2000. In the needle rule, different from the "orderly needle" in the Suzhou embroidery, they applied the method of the disorderly needle (inserting the needle in disorder) to mix the colors vividly. The Xiang embroidery uses the slender silk threads, which would never have the fur, applying the irregular needles to express the Yin, the Yang, the thickness and the shade, with the rich changes in the layers. In the development course of the Xiang embroidery, she formed her own unique artistic style, which was simple and beautiful, and made the great contribution for the establishment and the development of the Xiang embroidery.

Mr. Hu Lianxian, was a craftswoman in the late years in Qing Dynasty, with the ancestral home in Anhui Province. In her childhood, her father moved to Suzhou to work as an official, so she went to Jiangsu as well, and lived in Suzhou for long time, and therefore, she was titled as the "Suzhou People". Since her childhood, she began to learn the Suzhou-style embroidery, as well as the painting. After getting married in 20, she went back to Changsha, Hunan Province, and making a living with her embroidery. Later she established the "Needlecraft by Ms. Hu Lianxian" and the "Wu Caixia's Embroidery Workshop" to make the embroidery works, making the research and the improvements of the needle rules and material selections of the embroidery, and imparting her skills to the women in poverty.

Chinese Jade Arts

During the Shang Dynasty (1600-1100BC,) craftsmen used metal tools to make progress in jadeware models and sculpture. Round jade articles increased in large numbers and jadeware was often given as a gift.

The jade-carving technique was developed quickly in the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods (770-221BC.) The Spring and Autumn Period was known for its well-carved and exquisite jadeware. The coherent and undulating patterns of the dragon, phoenix and Panli (a figure of Chinese folklore) on the jade decorations are still treasured today.

During the Qin and Han dynasties (221BC-AD220), jadeware became more practical and objects such as jade tablets became obsolete. At that time, people began to believe in the power of jadeware to increase longevity: They thought they would live forever like gods if they possessed jadeware. Therefore, the practice of burying the dead with jadeware became common. Invaluable jade figures and clothes sewn with golden thread have been found in tombs dating back to the Han Dynasty.

During the Three Kingdoms (AD220-280) until the Song and Yuan dynasties (960-1368), there were no great developments in jade carving. This changed in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) when many famous craftsmen emerged. White jade vessels with golden holders and white jade bowls with golden lids, which were unearthed in the Ming Tombs, reflected the dynasty's peak level in jade carving. The jadeware technique peaked during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) under the advocacy of Emperor Qianlong.
